Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 at Barry Primary and Nursery School – a year of wonder, nature and playful learning!

In Year 1, we build on the foundations of Reception with a creative and hands-on curriculum that encourages exploration and imagination. We begin the year by studying the seasons, collecting natural materials in Abington Park to create spiral art and nature-inspired writing. Our learning is linked to lovely picture books like Percy the Park Keeper and The Enormous Turnip, which support language and literacy.

We explore our senses through games, tasting sessions and feely boxes and begin to experiment with digital art and model-making. In Spring, we dive into traditional tales and create our own stories, while in History, we investigate how toys have changed over time. A highlight of the year is our trip to Twycross Zoo, where we explore animal groups and habitats, followed by puppet-making and sculpture in DT and art.

In the summer, we use globes and maps to locate hot and cold places and learn about fruits and healthy eating. From making smoothies to counting to 100 and writing complete sentences, Year 1 is a joyful year full of exciting firsts, creative moments, and steady steps into more formal learning.
