Our Commitment to Play

At Barry Primary School, we believe that play is a fundamental part of every child’s school experience. We are committed to ensuring that all decisions affecting play reflect our dedication to high-quality, inclusive and engaging play opportunities for every child. We prioritise the development and maintenance of outstanding play provision to support the growth and well-being of all pupils.

Why Play Matters

We understand that play is vital for children’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual development. Through play, children can explore, create and engage with the world around them in a way that is natural and meaningful to them. Our play provision is designed to be inclusive and welcoming to all children, regardless of background, ability or individual needs. We encourage play that aligns with our school values of creativity, aspiration, respect and enjoyment.

As part of our commitment, we follow the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) Primary Programme, which recognises that "better, more active and creative playtimes can lead to happier and healthier children." In turn, this results in a more positive learning experience, improved classroom behaviour and a greater sense of well-being among both pupils and staff.

What is Play?

Play provides an opportunity for children to:

  • Stay active, healthy, and engaged.
  • Develop problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Build confidence and resilience.
  • Explore emotions and learn to manage different feelings.
  • Foster creativity, independence, and teamwork.
  • Expand their understanding of the world around them.

How Play Reflects Our School Values

  • Creativity – Play allows children to use their imagination, communicate their ideas, and solve problems in new and innovative ways.
  • Aspiration – We encourage children to take on challenges, try new things and develop confidence in their abilities through play.
  • Respect – Our play environments promote kindness, cooperation and inclusivity, helping children build positive relationships and respect for one another and the school environment.
  • Enjoyment – Play brings joy and excitement to the school day, ensuring that children look forward to learning and socialising with their peers.

Our Aims for Play

We strive to:

  • Create diverse and stimulating play environments.
  • Encourage children to take responsibility for managing risk in their play.
  • Support the development of friendships and social skills.
  • Foster respect for others and the school environment.
  • Enhance learning opportunities through play across all areas of the curriculum.
  • Encourage independence, teamwork and resilience.

Children’s Right to Play

Our school recognises the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which highlights every child’s right to play (Article 31) and the importance of listening to their views (Article 12). We actively seek children’s input on play opportunities through school assemblies and the school council.

Balancing Risk and Play

We understand that risk-taking is a natural and valuable part of play. While we take safety seriously, we also recognise the importance of providing opportunities for children to assess and manage risks independently. Our approach follows national guidance to ensure that children experience a healthy balance between risk and safety, helping them develop essential life skills.

By nurturing a rich and varied play environment, we aim to make every school day more engaging, meaningful, and enjoyable for our children. Through play, we are helping them develop skills that will benefit them far beyond their primary school years.
